21 days.
Someone in the staff room has scrawled these two huge numbers onto the whiteboard, starting a bright red visual countdown, and ecstatic as I am to don my flip flops and hit the beach, I'm already mourning the reality that I only have one more month left with my precious students.
Parents - thank you for entrusting your children into my care. I have been blessed to work with such a curious, open-minded, courteous bunch. A substitute recently commented, "Great class, you are spoiled!" and I couldn't agree more. Journal entries and class discussions always reflected how much love my students truly feel from their families, and this was incredibly heartwarming. You have appreciative young souls in your midst, and my hope is they continue to stay grounded, aware of how lucky they are to be among not only loving parents and guardians, but an entire community that's rooting for them.
Students - We have had our moments of tension. We have suffered awkward silences when individuals or groups have not been paying attention and were unable to answer the teacher's questions! (Ahem!) However, we have soared high and taken risks in other situations, developed and maintained a growth mindset, and delivered. We have discovered our unique strengths, our academic prowess. We have stood up to expectations and even exceeded them. I am VERY proud to be your English Language Arts teacher - it has been a wonderful ride through sixth grade. Sometimes we trudged on, barely making it, sliding our feet forward with great resistance. Other times we walked ahead full steam, heads held high with confidence, eyes straight, not looking back. Overall, we kept a steady pace and have arrived at a new destination: the end of one journey, but at the brink of another.
I know it's early, but I will miss you so much. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week so I have been floored by all the kind messages and gestures I've received all week.
Here's the secret to why we continue to do what we do: it's YOU.
Love,
Miss T.
