"Today, you will be writing a multi-paragraph essay..."
Usually these words alone are enough to give students a heart attack! However, I am VERY proud to say that as a class, we are improving on our essay writing skills. My hope is that with practice, essay-writing is becoming less frightening. The goal is to have all sixth grade students confidently tackle a writing prompt and finish an entire essay in one sitting.
Writing is a lot like learning a new sport or hobby. I have been dancing for years (started when I was six!), but it's only recently that I've started becoming more comfortable freestyling in front of crowds. Freestyling TERRIFIES me - it means you have to make up moves on the spot in front of tons of people! It's something I've always watched others do in awe, and never thought I could do myself. However, these days, I am taking classes to help me with performing in front of others, and I'm starting to feel a lot more confident. I'm definitely not ready to enter any dance battles just yet, but hopefully one day! For now, I'll stick to busting moves at the dances with my students! :)
Writing takes practice. Learning how make a claim, incorporate evidence, explain your reasoning...all of that comes with time. However, the point is to keep at it! Just like I've gotten better at freestyling, you will get better at writing essays the more you do it!
Stay cool,
Miss T.
